If you see someone who needs help please don’t pretend you don’t see them.

Tonight, what should have been a 45 minute trip there and back to a neighboring town to grab Ellie, became a harrowing three hour drive when we found ourselves in the middle of the worst winter weather I remember driving in.

To add to the white knuckling behind the wheel my windshield wipers stopped working.

I pulled over at a bank where all the employees were leaving. I was still hoping to fix them and was talking to Thomas about how, as each person walked past me without saying a word. Two actively tried not to make eye contact.

I then tried to get roadside assistance but windshield wipers apparently don’t qualify. They wouldn’t come.

So I pushed on. Got to Ellie. And long story short stopped at two different car places to get help that told us they were closed. Mind you I was driving with zero wipers. Just arriving at each place felt like moving a mountain. And they were right there.

A police officer was in the parking lot of one of the places. He wouldn’t get out of his car to look at them and told us to drive back into town to a differnt car place.

I pointed out I couldn’t see. He shrugged.

Finally at the third car place we stopped at a young lady came out and said, “No problem”. Grabbed a wrench, tightened up the bolts and had us on our way in 5 minutes.

I could have sobbed.

Instead we cheered and almost gave her a heart attack.

She didn’t even charge us. What a gift. Don’t worry I stopped short of jumping out of my car and hugging her.

It still took us over an hour of more harrowing roads to get home but my faith in humanity was restored by our snow angel. (Yes, I'm aware I'm using harrowing again. I actually just keep spontaneously saying the word harrowing as I sit here because it was that harrowing of a drive).

But friends, right before we got to her legit had no idea what we would do. I walked out of the last place after they repeated they were closed saying, “it’s fine, I guess theres no room at the inn.”

And I thought what privilege I live in that for the first time in my life I felt what it’s like when you really can’t get anyone to help you.

It’s a terrible and lonely feeling. I don’t want anyone to have that feeling ever.

We are one body.

We need to be there for each other. You might not be able to fix things for people but we can at least try.

Sorry that’s not something I can do or have time for? Looking away and trying not to make eye contact.

We can do better.

Let this be our reminder that it is our job, like our one job on this planet, to love one another.

And care about each others windshield wipers.

And also their ability to afford food, shelter, clothing, and to have basic human rights.

All the things.

We’re in this together.
